Revolutionizing Forensic Science at UP DARL
The relaunch of the University of the Philippines Drugs of Abuse Research Laboratory (UP DARL) marks a significant milestone not only for the university but also for global scientific innovation. Equipped with the world’s first Agilent LC/Q-TOF Revident, this cutting-edge technology enables the laboratory to detect and identify psychoactive substances in real-time, enhancing the ability of law enforcement and medical teams to respond swiftly to emergencies.
Located within the UP Manila College of Pharmacy, UP DARL is a pioneering facility dedicated to the study and analysis of drugs of abuse and emerging psychoactive substances. It plays a vital role in supporting law enforcement and medical teams by providing real-time detection and identification of illicit substances, thereby improving responses to drug-related emergencies.
As a leader in forensic science and toxicology in the Philippines, UP DARL is committed to advancing research and public safety initiatives to address the country’s challenges with drug abuse.

Challenge
UP DARL faced a growing challenge in addressing the increasing complexity of new party drugs and psychoactive substances, many of which are difficult to analyze using conventional methods. These substances posed significant obstacles to timely detection, particularly in emergency situations.
Additionally, there was a pressing need to bridge the gap between forensic analysis and on-ground law enforcement support to mitigate drug-related risks more effectively.
Approach
To address these challenges, we provided the Agilent LC/Q-TOF Revident, an advanced mass spectrometry solution designed for precise, real-time analysis of psychoactive substances. Working closely with UP DARL, we ensured the seamless installation and integration of this groundbreaking technology—the first of its kind globally—into their operations.
Our support extended beyond delivering the equipment. We aligned with the laboratory’s vision to combat drug abuse effectively, offering technical expertise, training, and ongoing support to ensure the system was fully optimized. This collaborative effort has elevated UP DARL’s operational capabilities, enabling it to achieve greater accuracy and efficiency in its mission.
The installation of the Agilent LC/Q-TOF Revident not only enhanced the laboratory’s capabilities but also positioned it as a globally recognized leader in forensic toxicology. Our partnership exemplifies our commitment to fostering innovation and empowering institutions that make a positive societal impact.
Result
Since the installation of the Agilent LC/Q-TOF Revident, UP DARL has significantly improved its ability to detect and identify psychoactive substances. The real-time analysis provided by this advanced mass spectrometry system has enabled the laboratory to deliver faster, more precise results, offering critical support to law enforcement and medical teams during emergencies.
Although the deployment is still in its early stages, UP DARL has already received widespread recognition as the first laboratory in the world to utilize this groundbreaking technology. This milestone reflects its commitment to cutting-edge research and public safety. As the laboratory continues to assist in drug-related investigations and support law enforcement initiatives, its success with the LC/Q-TOF Revident is expected to garner further recognition, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness in real-world applications.
Although the project faced various challenges, UP DARL’s trust in DKSH remains strong. They firmly believe that, with our support and expertise, the new equipment will meet their needs effectively. This confidence reflects not just a professional relationship, but a partnership built on mutual trust. We are fully committed to ensuring their success.
