Sample Preparation for Food Analysis

Simplify and standardize your food sample handling with culture media, media preparation, blenders, diluters and filter bag.

Sample Preparation

Simplify and standardize your food sample handling when preparing dilutions for direct testing or enrichment. Whether you need accurate and rapid sample dilution or quieter homogenizing, DKSH enrichment and preparation solutions are designed to maximize efficiency.

Culture Media – Enrichment

Enrichment culture is the use of certain growth media to favor the growth of a microorganism over others, enriching a sample for the microorganism of interest. This is generally done by introducing nutrients or environmental conditions that only allow the growth of an organism of interest. Enrichment cultures are used to increase a small number of desired organisms to detectable levels. This allows for the detection and identification of microorganisms with a variety of nutritional needs.

Buffered Pepton water and Fraser broth are the most common diluent used in microbiology. You can prepare it yourself or use a ready-to-use media.

Media Preparation

Traditionally, microbiology labs have used steam autoclaves to prepare and sterilize media for culturing microorganisms. Although autoclaves are an excellent means of sterilization, they are not designed to maintain the fertility of carefully formulated culture media.

In comparison, media preparators ensure maximum sterility is achieved while minimizing the damage to the nutrient components. They enable technicians to prepare culture media in an easy, reproducible way that improves the overall quality of the media.

Comparison of traditional method and using media preparators to prepare media

Disadvantages of using an autoclave to prepare mediaAdvantages of using media preparators to prepare media
• Requires multiple preparation steps including weighing, diluting and pre-heating of dehydrated media
• Risk of personal injury when boiling media on hotplates and handling hot bottles
• Excessive heating can result in pH drift, poor gel strength and degradation of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and peptides
• Extended heating periods can cause sugars in the medium to caramelize, reducing its ability to support microbial growth
• Temperatures reached in different parts of the autoclave can vary, resulting in variations in the appearance and fertility of the media
• Significantly reduces the time needed to run a full cycle
• Allow large volumes of media to be prepared at once
• Ensure good media homogeneity
• No need to weigh and dilute multiple bottles of dehydrated media
• Reduce the manual operations required and minimizing the risk of error and contamination
• Enable full traceability of media preparation

Blenders, Diluters and Filter Bags

Weigh and dilute with an automated gravimetric dilutor for all size of food samples up to 375 grams of food sample preparations.

Blend with a silent blender that enables rapid and efficient homogenization (for small and large sample sizes).

The blending bags have been specially designed for safe and efficient sample preparation and validated to offer excellent performance at a low cost. They are available with or without a filter and enable traceability with batch number (models with filters).
