The National University of Singapore utilized cutting-edge flow cytometry technology to keep itself at the forefront of pediatrics research.

The National University of Singapore is a leading university on the global stage. Its three campuses are home to over 40,000 students and 12,000 staff. It has 16 colleges, faculties, and schools, along with over 35 research institutes and centers.

The university’s key research areas include cancer, genetics, immunology, metabolic diseases, and cardiac health as well as studies on disease trends, health outcomes, and neurocognitive development problems.

Challenge

The university required cutting-edge flow cytometry technology for neonatal immune profiling diagnostics that would enable accurate and reliable delivery of data, putting it at the forefront of pediatrics research.

Because neonates had low blood volume, the test needed to operate with minimal blood. Unfortunately, the lab’s existing flow cytometers lacked the capabilities to efficiently handle such low-volume samples. This limitation resulted in a more cumbersome workflow, requiring additional fluorochromes and sample preparation time. Thus, more advanced technology was required.

Approach

We began by thoroughly understanding the customer’s needs and areas for improvement. Multiple discussions were held to address these needs and explore how we could enhance their research endeavors.

We introduced the Cytek Northern Lights CLC, a cutting-edge clinical full spectrum flow cytometry system. This technology is designed to enhance operational efficiency in clinical laboratories by allowing high plex size panels with the use of highly overlapping dyes. This capability meets the critical requirement to operate with minimal blood samples.

Full spectrum flow cytometry is also particularly advantageous for clinical applications as it enables more comprehensive data collection from a single tube, thereby reducing the necessity for multiple tube assays and additional sample preparation time, ultimately saving time, resources, and precious patient samples.

In addition to our standard customer training sessions, we organized comprehensive educational sessions on full spectral analysis. These sessions were open to the entire pediatric department to ensure all users could fully grasp the benefits of the Cytek Northern Lights system. Furthermore, we provided application support to assist in designing panels aimed at advancing research excellence within their laboratory.

Result

By implementing the Cytek Northern Lights CLC system, users experienced significant reductions in both cost and time associated with sample preparation, particularly in the staining process.

This system streamlined the entire workflow, optimizing efficiency and resource utilization. With its advanced capabilities, users achieved robust and accurate results consistently, ensuring reliable data for their research and clinical applications.

Thanks to DKSH, our pediatrics department could allocate more time and resources towards data analysis and interpretation, ultimately enhancing the overall productivity and effectiveness of our projects and patient care initiatives.
