Empyrean X-Ray Diffraction Makes Impressive Debut in the Philippines
A leading center of physics education and research in the Philippines became the first in the market to install an Empyrean X-ray diffraction equipment for all their sample testing needs and research work.
The National Institute of Physics, College of Science, University of the Philippines in Diliman (UPD NIP) was established in 1983. It currently offers degree programs and graduate degree programs with more than 350 students annually. It aims to be the leading center of physics education and research in the Philippines.

Challenge
Our customer had an outdated Empyrean X-ray diffraction (XRD) equipment for over 30 years. An XRD is a widely used technique to assess the crystallinity and structure of solid samples. They initially wanted to repair it, but the critical hardware components were no longer in production and with technical support not available.
As UPD NIP has different types of samples to be analyzed as they work on a wide variety of applications, including powder diffraction, thin-film metrology, computed tomography, SAXS/WAXS, and stress analysis, they needed an instrument that could provide them with a complete solution for all their sample testing needs.
Approach
DKSH’s sales and application specialists worked together with Malvern Panalytical’s application specialist to fully understand our customer’s needs and requirements.
We recommended the third-generation Empyrean Multicore XRD. This multipurpose and fully automated XRD unit is the complete solution for different samples and testing. It can perform the largest variety of measurements without any manual intervention.
Besides meeting all the technical specifications of the project, we helped trained the researchers on the Empyrean’s capabilities in measuring ternary alloys, nanomaterials, and thin films. This was the only multipurpose laboratory XRD diffractometer that also performs x-ray computed tomography measurements. We also provide the customer with full application and local service support.
Result
This was DKSH’s first installation of the Empyrean XRD solutions in the Philippines. Along with the comprehensive education, training, and equipment support from us and Malvern Panalytical, the customer has achieved improved samples and testing results, while further elevating the institute’s capabilities.
We are grateful that DKSH offers full solution support and services for our application. The Empyrean XRD is perfect for testing and research needs, especially for ternary alloys, nanomaterials, and thin films.
