DKSH’s Business Unit Technology expertise in industrial regulations and laboratory equipment helped set up an industry-leading polymer innovation center in Seoul.

Polymer production in Korea is a rapidly growing sector and relies on investment in research and development to ensure it remains innovative and cutting-edge on the world stage. DKSH’s Business Unit Performance Materials, a leading ingredients and specialty chemicals distributor, has a global network of 39 innovation centers including nine for the specialty chemicals industry and 13 for the personal care and cosmetics industry.

Challenge

DKSH’s Business Unit Performance Materials required a new center to showcase and demonstrate all the latest technology for evaluation, testing and finding solutions in polymer applications production with a focus on engineering plastics and polymer additives.

To set up the center, they needed the help of a business expert with strong knowledge of the regulations involved, access to the required laboratory equipment and solutions as well as one with an in-depth understanding of the local market.

Approach

DKSH’s Business Unit Technology provided an integrated one-stop solution that included sourcing, logistics, application engineering, training and after-sales services. The laboratory is equipped with the latest technology from leading brands such as Industrial Physics and Olympus.

The state-of-the-art equipment includes a universal testing machine, impact tester, melt indexer, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyzer and digital microscope.

Result

The new polymer innovation center is fully compliant with all required safety regulations, workflow and testing procedures. It is operated by specialists with extensive experience in polymer R&D and they conduct regular activities including customer seminars, technical trainings, injection molding tests and product property comparisons.

DKSH’s Business Unit Performance Materials also recorded substantial cost savings while having an optimized solution to meet the highest regulatory standards. They are already planning to expand the innovation center soon by installing additional equipment such as an XRF, a water activity analyzer and an oxidation analyzer.
